What happens if you pay attention to each aspect of taste? My clients say they appreciate and enjoy their food more when they get themselves to do this. The quick, salty pretzel snack becomes something that is a little sweet, quite salty, a little bitter and a bit more interesting and enjoyable.
Now what happens if you put the pretzels on a hand-crafted oak platter, next to several porcelain cups with various mustards in them, on top of a glistening round antique oak table? Wouldn’t their appeal increase compared to the appeal of a plastic bag of pretzels being munched in your car? Appearance definitely matters. Smell and texture in food also matter. If your pretzels were stale, rubbery or smelled funny, you’d find them less lovable. If you like coffee, you know that a strong coffee smell and an appealing mug and setting in which to drink it all affect its lovability.
You can use all four aspects of the lovability of food to make your low-fat world much more enjoyable. Consider trying the following lovability enhancers as often as possible:
•Accentuate taste by eating slowly and attempting to identify the degree to which whatever you eat tastes sweet, salty, sour and bitter. You can think of this as savoring your food by making yourself aware of each element of its taste.
•Maximize the appearance of food that you serve yourself. This applies even when eating your food out of a microwavable box. It helps to put the food on a nice plate and sit down at a pleasant table for your meal. You can try adding candles, place settings and flowers to create your own beautiful ambiance.
•Enjoy the smells of food. All food smells are fat-free and calorie free! You can try this at coffee shops, cheese counters and other places where strong appealing smells waft through the air. For your own food, take time to identify the smells and notice what you enjoy about each of them.
•Pay attention to texture in everything you eat. You can enjoy luxurious textures in very low-fat foods quite readily. Can you think of chewy fat-free foods that you sometimes enjoy (hint: gum, turkey jerky)? Certainly frozen yogurts can vary in creaminess, and lots of healthful snacks have plenty of crunch, like carrots, pretzels and most fresh vegetables. For smooth qualities, smoothies and even certain cereals can prove satisfying.
Sweet Potatoes: A Lovable Food that Loves You Back
Lovable foods can certainly, definitely and without a doubt include foods that love you back. Foods that help you lose weight, achieve your goals, make you healthier, that are constructive rather than destructive, can fulfill all of the qualities of traditional lovable foods.
The same clients who waxed poetic about steaks and chocolate sundaes have talked lovingly about sweet potatoes:

•“They fill me up—and do it with warmth and flavor.”
